Tanglin Law has appointed Dr Benjamin Mah as Principal (Data Protection & Technology) to deepen the Firm’s law-driven focus at the intersection of data protection, cybersecurity and AI emerging technologies (including cryptocurrency), and to embed legal, regulatory, and data-protection assurance into client programmes from design through operations.
Working together with the lawyers from Tanglin Law, Dr Mah helps data-intensive organisations (including healthcare) operationalise compliance through governance, regulatory and contractual frameworks, translating legal requirements into implementable controls, decision rights and accountability. This includes supporting the review and drafting of data-protection policies, data-sharing agreements, incident-response playbooks, and board-level governance structures that align with organisational requirements on information sharing, safeguards and breach notification.
Experience
Dr Mah is a technology executive and legal scholar with 30+ years’ Asia-Pacific experience spanning digital transformation, cybersecurity innovation and regulatory strategy. He is known for bridging commercial objectives with complex regulatory landscapes and for his ability to engage credibly with key stakeholders, including government regulators. His background includes scaling deep-tech ventures to USD $100M+ valuations and leading regional P&L roles at global technology companies including Oracle and IBM.
Dr Mah co-founded V-Key, where he conceptualised and patented the “Software Virtual Secure Element,” a security foundation used by major digital banks including DBS, OCBC and UOB. As Managing Director of e-Cop, he led operational turnaround and achieved ISO/IEC 27001 certification while managing security operations for Tier-1 Asian banks.
In today’s regulatory environment, Dr Mah brings practical expertise in incident response and operational resilience, including familiarity with frameworks referenced in his profile. He also holds governance and public-sector advisory experience, including Workforce Singapore (Board Member & Audit Committee) and leadership roles supporting industry-government dialogue on digital trust and cyber resilience.
Dr Mah also contributes to ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 42, including work associated with ISO/IEC 42001:2023 (AI Management Systems), and he leads the AI Practice for Oracle Asia Pacific & Japan, advising C-suite stakeholders on AI governance and resilience strategies.
